Motorhome Hire Frequently Asked Questions
Are there any hidden costs when hiring a motorhome?
No, there are no hidden costs with Busy Lil’ Motorhome Company. As a small family-run business, we believe in transparent pricing—you pay exactly the price quoted. Our motorhomes come fully equipped with everything you need for your adventure, so you won’t be hit with unexpected fees like some larger hire companies. Optional extras are clearly listed during booking, keeping things simple and fair.
Is there a damage deposit when hiring a motorhome?
Yes, we require a £1,000 damage deposit, similar to car hire. This amount is held against your payment method and only used if there’s any damage during your rental. To reduce your financial risk, we strongly recommend purchasing a damage waiver policy from reputable providers online. This waiver can lower your deposit liability to the amount specified in your policy for any single damage incident, giving you extra peace of mind on your motorhome holiday.
What are the driving requirements and dimensions for our motorhomes?
We offer a range of motorhomes with different sizes and weights. Here are the unloaded dimensions and weights for each model:
- Escape: 6m long, 3m high, 2.3m wide, 2.9 tonnes
- Journey & Wanderer: 6.4m long, 3m high, 2.3m wide, 2.9 tonnes
- Navigator: 6.4m long, 3.2m high, 2.3m wide, 3.1 tonnes

- Discovery: 7.4m long, 3m high, 2.2m wide, 3.1 tonnes
You do not need a special driving licence to drive these vehicles, but you must ensure the total weight (including passengers and luggage) stays under your licence limit of 3.5 tonnes.
Our motorhomes are approved for EuroTunnel crossings. When booking, register your vehicle as a motorhome using the above dimensions. If you have bikes on the rear rack, add an extra metre to the length for accurate registration.
What is our availability?
You can check live motorhome availability directly on our website. Simply choose your preferred motorhome and enter your dates to see what’s available in real time, along with the current price for your travel dates. If you’re flexible, it’s also worth checking nearby dates as availability can change quickly—especially in school holidays and peak season.
How do payments work for motorhome hire?
All payments are securely processed through our website using Stripe, the trusted payment system used by many high street stores.
We require a 50% deposit at the time of booking, with the remaining balance automatically charged 30 days before your hire date.
Alternatively, you can opt to pay monthly at no extra cost. Simply let us know, and we’ll split the final balance into manageable monthly payments. A £1 payment is taken at booking confirmation to secure your reservation.
Where can I travel in a motorhome?
You can explore amazing destinations across the UK and the European Union with our motorhomes. Whether you prefer pre-booking campsites or discovering spots on the go, there are many motorhome travel apps that show campsites, free overnight parking, and available facilities.
Check out our Places to Visit in a Motorhome page for curated suggestions, including nearby campsites, aires, and wild camping locations.
For EU travel, we provide Aires guides, featuring typically free, scenic stops perfect for travellers who like to move frequently.
If you plan to travel abroad (outside mainland UK), please inform us as early as possible so we can arrange the necessary VE103R form required for your hire.
When travelling internationally, it’s your responsibility to carry all mandatory equipment for the countries you visit. These can be purchased at Halfords or port shops. Requirements vary by country, so it’s important to check in advance to ensure you’re fully prepared.
What is wild camping in a motorhome?
Wild camping means staying overnight outside of designated campsites or serviced areas, such as in the countryside or by the roadside. It offers a more adventurous and flexible way to explore.
When wild camping, it’s essential to have plenty of water on board for washing, cooking, and basic needs. Our motorhomes are designed to support off-grid living—they charge leisure batteries while driving and have solar panels to keep power flowing as long as you move daily.
Water supply is the key to successful wild camping. We personally carry extra water to top up the tanks, ensuring a comfortable and self-sufficient experience.
What counts as acceptable proof of address for the insurance?
We require either:
- Two documents from the Primary Proof of Address list, or
- One document from the Primary list and one from the Secondary Proof of Address list.
All documents must be dated within the last 90 days (except council tax, which can be the last annual statement). Each document must clearly show your name, address (matching your driving licence), and date. Other information can be redacted.
Primary Proof of Address includes:
- Electricity, Water, Gas bills
- Broadband or Landline bills
- Council tax statements
- Bank statements or credit card bills
- Mortgage statements
- HMRC self-assessment or tax credits
Secondary Proof of Address includes:
- Student loan statements
- Payslips
- Mobile phone bills
- Pension letters
- Car finance or loan statements
- Property deeds
Providing these documents promptly helps us process your booking efficiently.
What are the pick-up and drop-off times for motorhome hire?
Motorhome handovers are at 10am on the first day of your hire. Vehicles must be returned at 1pm on the final day.
If you need extra time, you can book a late checkout option to return the motorhome at 6pm for an additional fee.
Please note, as a small family-run business (not a large showroom), our staff are only available during these advertised times. If you require pick-up or drop-off outside these hours, please arrange this with us in advance.
What is included in the motorhome?
Each motorhome comes fully equipped with a detailed inventory list available on the individual vehicle pages of our website. This ensures you know exactly what standard equipment is provided for a comfortable and enjoyable trip.
We also offer additional items that are not part of the standard kit. If you need something specific, please contact us by phone or email to check availability.
Please note, for safety and insurance reasons, we do not provide ramps with our vehicles.
Do the motorhomes have TV's?
We have removed TVs from our newer motorhomes because we couldn’t guarantee a reliable signal while on the move, which led to some customer complaints and refund requests for this extra feature.
Are pets allowed in the motorhomes?
Yes — we welcome pets in selected pet-friendly motorhomes. Because pets aren’t covered under our insurance, we do ask for a quick chat before you book so we can confirm the right vehicle for you and run through a few simple expectations. If you’re planning to bring a dog, please call us before booking.
Are awnings included with the motorhomes?
Due to repeated misuse resulting in significant damage, we have removed all awnings from our motorhomes. Although some vehicles like the Discovery and Hercules may be pictured with awnings, these have been removed for insurance reasons. We appreciate your understanding.
